Artiste Associé with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, Lionel Bringuier, returns to Nice on January 26 to lead the orchestra in a program that is 100% made in Nice: Bringuier invites his brother, Nicolas Bringuier, to perform Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. The two brothers have played this work separately and many times together, and for Lionel, his brother’s interpretation remains a firm favorite.
Also on the program is Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (arr. Ravel). Of the work, music writer Orrin Howard said: “The fevered inspiration was activated by a posthumous exhibit in 1874 of watercolors and drawings by Mussorgsky’s dear friend, Victor Hartmann, who had died the previous year suddenly at the age of 39. Mussorgsky’s enthusiastic and reverent homage to Hartmann is a series of musical depictions of ten of the artist’s canvasses, all of which hang as vividly in aural space as their visual progenitors occupied physical space.”
